Hey guys, After wanting one for many years, I finally aquired a 1972 (year I was born) XS650
My first new bike was a 2002 SV650 and I still ride it every day.
I plan on keeping the XS pretty stock. It's in rough shape right now but I will be slowly getting replacement parts to make it look pretty.
Having a little trouble getting it running right. Cleaned the carbs but it needs a new battery and points & condenser.
I look forward to asking lots of questions and reading through the site.
I haven't even ridden it yet but I really love this bike.
Thanks,
Stu.

Welcome, early XS lover!
Do yourself a favor and learn from my mistake: try to avoid chasing what may be an electrical/ignition issue through the carbs. Now that you have cleaned your carbs (you may need to do that more then once, with special focus on the pilot circuit), get your iggy system top flight as a priority... points and condenser, plugs, caps, wires, coil. Consider a PAMCO electronic trigger and appropriate coil as an alternative to points and condenser. Once you get your iggy sorted, then you're down to fuel delivery and mechanical possibilities.
Lots of good folks here.
Cheers!
TC

Awesome! Thanks. I've been working on bikes for a little while so I've already done a bunch of that stuff. Checked compression, checked the plugs, cleaned the carbs.
I want to check the valves and replace the points, condensor and batt. I've gotta clean the tank but I've been using another tank to run it.
Already did the brakes. Need to replace the tires. I'll definitely go through all of the electrical connections and clean them. Do you recommend using dielectric grease to keep them from corroding again?
The manual will definitely come in handy, thanks.
Don't worry, I'm on a bunch of other boards so I won't be asking any stupid noob questions before doing a search. Except that dielectric grease one
What kind of oil should I use in this thing?

The way I have done it is to use a spray called De-Oxit that is an electrical contact cleaner (available under other brand names) first then as I plug them in, put some dielectric grease on the connections.
As far as oil that is a subject for debate but I'll let you decide. Currently have Lucas 20w50 but think I'll do Pennzoil next time.
Read this , see if it helps.

Hope this helps.

Ha! I was just kidding about the oil. That's one of the questions we always get from noobs on the the SVRider board.
