Anyone had luck welding cracked fins on cylinders? Mine is the top fin, still connected but bent down by the animal who pulled the head. It will probably break off when straightened. I have a great tig welder but he is not sure how the metal will take it?

twojugs,
Bought one off e-bay. Must have broke the big fin at the head surface level. Welded OK. Just a word of caution, as you welder is hesitant, if the alloy is junk in that area, it won't take. You'll never know until he strikes the arc.

I bought 3 off Ebay and all 3 had bad fins after the seller advertised and told me they were fine. Of course they blame it on shipping althought the break edges were oxidized and full of 10 year old grease. Too bad the only recourse is to either ship it back for more money then the cost of the part or to give a neg and fix it or trash it.

I have one now at the local welder wiz. He said he fills in the area with weld then grinds it to shape. Lucky they were all top fin breaks, you know the kind that happens when goof balls put a screwdriver into the gap to pry off the head! I pick it up tomorrow. I will post the results.

Word of caution here, over heating the alluminum can cause problams with your cylinder sleeves .

I got back one of the cylinders and it looks pretty good. It was the top fin so it was easy to repair. They do many of these repairs and never had issues with warpage in the bores. Besides they are getting 1st over pistons so the bore job will bring everything back in line.
