So finally got my bike back together and did the igition timing but it still won't start. Here is what it is doing. I know it sound quality is terrible, but, hear that ppfftt sound it is making. Valve timing? I want to make sure that is what it is before I go out and buy a degree wheel and dial indicator. Thanks.

you can check valve timing pretty well by pulling the alternator cover, removing the valve covers on the left side and slowly turning the engine over with a wrench. Everyother revolution the exhaust valve will close and the intake open, the mid point should be TDC. If you are off a tooth this will tell you.

Pablo, it sound's like it is out of time. The manual doe's not do a real good job of explaining the proceedure. Check knucklebuster.com. I'd say do a compression test, 'cause if you did any damage, it's already done. One tooth off on the cam to crank timing will be enough to cause what you got.
Also, if the valve's are too tight, you'll get the same sound. So check that also.

I checked it and the arm is is on its way up at tpc. Is there anyway to adjust it with the engine in the bike?

No Pablo, gotta get all the way to the cam chain. Some here have talked about tilting the engine enough to clear the rocker cover, but if your gonna tear into it anyway, I figure just lift it to the bench for safety sake.

"you can check your stock cam timing for all years of the XS motor with the motor completely together and even installed in the bike."
From www.650motorcycles.com...iming.html
Hope this helps and let us know how you come out.
