Bought an '80 650... runs great... but yesterday... really hot here +34 Celsius... went for a ride... went out on the highway... wanted to see what this bike had in her... started out at 100km on a 110 highway... took her up to 120 and then 140... after this I noticed when I got back to town, just a 15km hop... that the bike had a ticking sound in top end... is this a cam chain deal or something more sinister like a c-clip come loose and wrist pin working out? I see what appears to be a push rod at the front of the engine... is that so? Can it be adjusted like a Shovel head and where do you adjust what I assume must be a cam chain running in the top end? If there is a cam chain for the top end what is the push rod for? One for intake and one for exhaust? Any help is appreciated.

Have had an 80 for quiet some time.........
First.........the carbs are "way" to lean for hot weather fast riding and it is geared "way" to low.......... you probably were looking at 270-280 right cylinder temps if you went very far...........
the valves are adjusted from the 4 covers on the head and the cam chain is adjusted in the rear between the cylinders under the acorn nut...(and should be adjusted whith the engine at operating temp and running so that the rod moves in and out about a MM...you should download a manual from biker.net ........ and welcome aborad.........

As John said, get a manual. It will be your most used "tool". It will explain just how these engines are put together and how to maintain them.
Welcome aboard.
