I recently rebuilt my engine and I got to start it today, and the sucker won't turn over. I put a socket on the flywheel and it will only turn about 30 degrees, I turned it back and forth and sometimes it will turn a couple of 360s and then stop. Any ideas. Preferably ones that don't involve me having to take the engine out again. Thanks!

pablo, did you remove the cylinder head? Like Joe stated, it could be slack in the camchain bunching up together. If you can turn it over a couple revolution's then it bind's up, the problem is not lube. I presume you have oil in it now.Is the cam timed correctly? Need to know what you did on the rebuild.

A few months ago, I totally rebuilt the engine, split the cases, the whole shebang. Replaced clutch pads and discs, cam chain guide, piston rings, stuff like that. I had to rebuild the top end, because I didn't put in the cam shaft properly and the ignition timing was off. So I just took the head off and broke the cam chain and and put the alignment mark where it needed to be.
I just undid the cam chain tensioner and it still locked up, I tightened it up almost all the way and no difference. When you tight the tensioner, Is there much Resistance, cause I didn't really feel any.

I think my cam chain is broken, I turn the engine over and cam shaft didn't move. Do they have a emoticon on here for pulling out my hair?!

Man! That'd be a pisser. If you're lucky, you may take the top off and fish an end up from front and back. Don't know how possible it is to get a cam chain in and around the crank without taking the jugs off.

Wow, sorry to hear that. As stated, though, you might be able to snake a new chain raround the crank with the bottom plate off. Get the rivit tool also when you get the new chain & gasket's. You stated that it hasn't run yet, so maybe the gasket's are still ok.XS john uses old head gasket's to achive his 8-1 comp. ratio, so, Keep me posted, OK? ,,,Gordo

Damn, can't edit my post's anymore.WTF. Pull out the whole tensioner assy. & peak into the opening, looking for your chain. If it's still running up & down, it's still in place. By the way, you don't have to split the chain to remove the cam. You do have to split it to replace it ,though. Unless you split the case's again. And yes, there should be some resistance on the adjuster when close to being in adjustment.

I am going to tear the whole engine down again anyway. I am not sure that I did shifter stuff right in the first place and I don't want to take the chance of having to for a forth time. Hopefully she will be upand running in a week or so. Thanks for the assistance guys.

Would leave the pistons in the jugs........just pull the pins....... or you are looking at another breakin and assoiciated wear from that...........

I have decided not to split the case, it shifts just fine, so I am going to just fish out the old one and hook the new one up to it and pull it through. It will be back together in no time!

Sound's like a plan! Good luck, & I hope it work's out good for you this time. I'll bet that engine comes out real easy now, like it's got zipper's on it.

Yeah. It has gotten easier. My cbr 1000, I recently have had to clean and adjust the carbs like six times. I can do it in my sleep now, the advantage of not being able to diagnose very well... You get good at disembling and reassembling engines.
