I would make sure the valves are adjusted right and run it. If the engine sat for long the rings may be a bit sticky, running will free them up.
Does it do it all the time or just at start up?

i just ran it shortly,i need the sidecover,for the clutch.i can't say,right now.
the valves run noisy,i can here it tapping.and than that typical xs-noise,high pitch, almost like hitting a can made of tin(but more metal-like)
but other than that,it sounds healthy.main bearing,no noises, pistons,no noises,i guess, good compression, let's see if the transmission is okay.i paid 40$ for the motor, rotor, stator inc..only thing missing is sidecover.

Not bad for a running engine. Yes , there is a bit of noise from the valves, A bit of noise is ok, no noise can mean the valves are to tight and won't seal well. Tight exhuast can burn the valves and seats.

white smoke... I found me a smokin good deal like that too
a long sitting XS engine.. everything checked out at first inspection, with the cylinders closed had good compression.. It started on the first kick.. and ate it's guides.
thought it was rings, soaked it with the penetrating oil for days and ran it around the block to get it hot.. only got worse..
opened it up and found brand new rings, clean bore, tight valve seats and trashed guides..
corrosion builds up on the valve stems and if they're hangin in the cylinder and get forced up through the guide without adequate lubrication it can damage the guides.. cut nice little lines in em.. totally wrecked mine. both sides.
the white smoke is oil evapourating without combustion.. off the stem and the valve face.. smells terrible and gets worse as it gets hotter. comes out of the front of the motor too.. out the tappet covers and the exhaust port.. that's what tipped me off.. does it only come out of your exhaust pipe?
I hope it's not your guides dude.. but even so for 40.00 if you had to rebuild the topend.. or swap heads.. it'd still be a great deal.
good luck
