I bought an 82 xs650 a month ago. It has 13000 miles on it. I changed the oil and filters on Saturday. 15 miles later it developed a top end rattle at the high end of each gear/during shifting. Does not seem to exist, but maybe it is not as noticeable when rpms are low. Ideas? Cam chain have too much slack in it? I am assuming that the oil change had noting to do with it, or did it? Maxum 4 Premium 20W50 is what I put in it. Thanks in advance.

Have you tuned it up per the manual including cam chain and valve adjustments? I'd try that first . It surely won't hurt and doesn't cost much. New plugs and some grease on your hands. That will eliminate the regular stuff as a possible issue and give you a base to start from if need be.

jerm,
Could also be something other than the engine rattling. My first choice would be the headlight. Mine rattles like that at 5,000 RPM. You'd swear it was the engine.

Isn't everything on these bikes gonna rattle at high RPM?
y XS would make my hands and feet numb if I cruised at 65 for more than a few minutes

Problem solved. The bolt that holds the gas tank in place had vibrated loose under the seat.

Lower the compression to 8-1 and change the gearing, no more numb.

DREDnot, loosen up the 'death grip' on the bar's. I,too, had that problem for a little while, & I've been riding since I was 7. Now on the better side of 50.Also, get some softer grip's, does help
