Hello everyone, I just bought 1974 TX650A this summer with 7800 original miles on it and it was the best 675 bucks I have ever spent considering it is my first motorcycle asside from quads from three wheelers.
The only problems I have are a stretching drive chain and frequent oil drips out the breather hoses at the bottom of the bike. Any way those I can live with those because Im going to ride the hell of this bike and sell it later for what I bought it for.
y questions: Right now I am using Rotella 15W-40 HDEO. Diesel oil is supposedly a great bike oil. Before I was using Pennzoil LL 15W-40 and when I went to clean the filter, it seemed like theres crap or sludge in the filter. Right now I have the bad starter problem but thats getting fixed this weekend. Do these 650s eat oil for breakfast and are 1000 mile oil changes good? My miles are mostly 55mph long trips and some 70mph short trips from exit to exit on the interstate. (it seems like this motor screams @ 70mph doing about 4500 rpms)
Second. I've tried 87 ocatane and got detenation right off the bat so I've been using 93 octane. Has anyone tried Sunoco 94? I just recently put some in the other day and really haven't noticed anything different.

1 point octane boost you probably wouldnt notice. as for the 70 mph screem , yes everyone is looking for another gear or two. Theres a lot of differences of opinion what gearing to switch to, Im going to drop tp a 31/or 32 tooth rear sprocket. but if you go through the posts carefully theres a lot of opinions out there. Altough I have never had a real tight engine most of the bikes I have been serviceing do use some oil but not rediculasly.

I ran into a 81 that when filled to the window level would spew oil out of the vent tube, But I noticed that the level was about 3/8" overfill on the dip stick so we ran it until it stopped blowing it and it was right at full on the tube at this point. to this day you cannot see oil in the window.
