When I was trying to get my 79 special going today I had some gas coming up from where the airfilter meets the carb but at the top where the connection to the carb meets the flat part of the air filter. it was when the bike would die and then make a "poof" sound that it happened. Any ideas what this could be, also there is gas leaking from the same airfilter area after the bike has been shut off, I am guessing because of a float malalignment. Any help on this would bre great thanks in advance.

newelly, I had that issue when I first got my bike running, and it turned out that the floats were misadjusted and allowing the bike to flood. Also, if you have manual petcocks - not sure about your '79 - make sure they're not leaking, and shut them off whenever the bike sits for longer than a few minutes.

Most likely to least likely:
Float(s) stuck due to varnish in the carbs
Float seats have crud from bottom of tank blocking the float valve from closing
isadjusted floats
Damaged floats
Time to get into the carbs and clean 'em.
