I torqued the 4 large acorn nuts on top of motor to try and stop a gasket leak right bellow the barrels. I over tourked a bit due to a miss adjusted wrench about 38 ft lbs and I heard a squeak down by the case . Do those posts that the nuts go on thread into the case, should they spin while torquing or just the nut? I backed off and torqued them to 32 i believe it was. It is still leaking. How tight can I tourq those nuts safelyt. I want to push it to see if I can stop the leak uintill winter then I'll have to do the gasket.

Wouldn't go over 35 LBS with antiseize..........had mine at 40 once and will never go that tight again...........and the squeak was probably no antiseize.....
I once cured a bottom barrel leak buy loosening all the head bolts and the cam chain and forced the barrels up with a pry bar.....then sprayed the area with brake cleaner and blew off the area with air and with my finger pushed some sealer in there....let it set for a while and then retorqued.......

Are you sure the leak is from under the cylinders and not say the cam chain adjuster cover?

If you have a leak there (cylinder base) its probobaly already to late to simply retorque. the ones under the sparkplugs are only for the head to cylinder. the 8 acorns are the only ones that hold the head AND cylinders. but like I said its probobly to late and the gasket may need replacing, unless its livable.

Ya its livable for now, ya I was hoping it was the cam chain adjuster but defiantly not.
