My '79 XS will not return to idle after I give it some throttle, rpms stay up at about 3000. I cleaned the carbs a while ago and I did not remove the rubber diaphragms. I did push them up through the intake side with my finger and there was resistance, so I thought that they were OK. What are the symptoms of a ripped or holed diaphragm? - or should I be looking for a clogged jet?

My friends hav the same problem with their 79's. If it is not an air leak
around the intake side of the carbs then it is in the choke mechanism.
There is a pencil sized hole on the engine side of the butterfly on the carb that takes air into the choke. If there is something wrong with the choke mechanism that can add the added air to make the thing race at idle. I have seen other posts that addressed the problem better than I can since I havn't taken the chokes apart yet. John Underwood
