Hi,
my 1983 Heritage XS is having starting issues. Sometimes it starts frst time and others it takes 2-3-4 times using the starter. It makes a hellacious squealing / grinding noise and will eventually start. I was told it was the starter clutch but after scouring a Haynes manual, I cant find any reference to that...so, I guess my questions are

a) does this bike have a "starter clutch"

or

b)is it more likely just the starter.

if this question is in the wrong section, feel free to move it to the right one!

Does it do it if you use the kick start?
Some good starter info.

After you fix the starter, clean your carbs, and clean all the electrical connectors/terminals/switches, especially the kill switch and ignition switch. If bike still has the original fuse panel, replace it with inline automotive blade type fuses.
