Just got myself a brand new set of Rings for my 78 XS 650 Chop.

Thing is i took it apart because of a horrible scraping noise coming from the pots, i knew straight away what it was.

These are the resulting symptoms.

You think these are still in useable condition or is time for the bin?

Those skirts look severely scored and no doubt the liners are in the same condition.

You need to mic liner and piston to assure proper piston skirt to liner tolerances are within specs cuz piston slap, poor ring seal and oil consumption could occur if out of tolerance

Thats right, so long as the piston to liner measurement is within tolerence then a few scrapes wont harm the piston performance(might even hold some extra lube!)If they're as rough as a badgers arse then rub em down with wet n dry if you're worried

Dimpled my piston skirts front and back 50 thousand mile ago for oil retention..... been doing that for 40 years..........

Also getting the sharp edge off the 2 compression rings with some light paper only makes since......did that 50 thou ago and still great compression at 74 thousand.........getting them to run cooler will also help......

Even lowered the compression to 8-1 at 60K......runs percect with 135-140 compression....and very smoothly.....was 150 at 8.7-1....at 60k.......
