Between 1957 and 1969, the Sportster was King of the American Street. Having lived through the era myself, I say: Thank God for Japanese motorcycles.

It's definitely nice to see a bike without one of those frikkin tanks on it. I've pretty much stopped commenting on the bikes over at xs650chopper.com because so many of them have a pre-fabbed weld on hard tail and a sporty peanut tank... and half of those are black.
I think it's cool that a lot of guys are finding an interest in bikes and modding, but a little bit of originality would be refreshing.

lol gs, took that kind of personally, didn't you? My comment was definitely NOT aimed in your direction. You chopped and tailed that frame yourself didn't you? you make your own pipes? Your chops are sweet.
You do have to admit that everyone is using the sporty peanut tank though. As far as the bike above... I can't frikkin wait to see it done. I saw that tank on another bike pic you have with a megaphone pipe... it looks badass.
And here is a pic of my bike. It's a lot farther along than this now. This was just throwing it together a bit at first to get an idea of the lines.
I also plan on doing another chop using a 1966 YDS6 tank. I was going to use it for this one but the lines are all wrong.

Glad to hear it, or I would have had to call you a pansy.
It is all in fun. And you're totally right about needing a thick skin to show off your work. And being a little cocky doesn't hurt.
I have a sweet husqy tank out in my hobo-bin. I think I'm going to use it on a 71 cl350 I have sitting out there... in a box... or seven.
I though it was Camaros, not opinions...
Jayel, I'm running a monoshock from an 85 Ninja 900. There's a plate on that bottom girder support that the bottom of the shock bolts to and runs up under the seat. At least that's the plan. the shock should be here in the next day our two, then I'll know if it's going to work.... of course a hill climber could be fun... KNOBBIES HERE I COME!!!

Hi Guys,
All these posts, and not a word about Mustang tanks on Harleys? What's up with that?? The thing about Sportster tanks is that they have to be filled every 90 miles or so---actually, not a bad thing on a rigid-frame bike, I guess....
Oh, and Guys? I need a '77 tank to go on my '79, to make a standard out of a "special"---anyone running a Sporty tank have the stock tank lying about, getting underfoot and always in the way? Never fear! Just say the word, and it's as good as gone!
Oh, and if anyone has an old Norton Interstate tank, I'll trade one of my kids for it....well, maybe not, but I'd love to find one....

Barb:
Since your T-140 is nameless I think that "Michael Jackson" just became available again. Just a thought.

There's an Interstate tank and covers on eBay right now for the low, low price of $1500... plus $25 for shipping....
They are beautiful though.

tito, love the tank, especially on that frame... and that frame rocks! Did you fab the frame yourself? Crazy drop! I'm really digging it. I would have loved to go that low with my swingarm build, but just not enough room.
Is this a recent pic? How far along are you with it?
I, for one, would love to see updates of your build.

Hey Nudude,
I named it! I should change my little list, I guess. I named it "Pip", after the character in "Great Expectations", because for that bike I have--guess what?--Great Expectations!
Now I gotta find the perfect name for the '79.......
(Oh, and since the '77 is stock, more or less, and the '79 is gonna look nice, I don't think I'd name either one Michael Jackson.....their noses might fall off, and they might start looking at little kids in a not so good manner.....)
Besides, I ride them.........EEEWWWWWW!!!!!
