Nothing like being behind any sort of livestock truck on a bike... That will separate the wheat from the chaff in a damn hurry!
y two personal bests... an Iowa pig truck, and a dairy farm tractor hauling the s*** spreader behind it... fun times, man.... fun times...

Somehow, I don't think it would be the same... Kind of like throwing up a tent in your back yard... if your back yard was filled with crackheads, whores, gang members, and drug dealers, and was right along the turnpike, a shooting range and an ambulance service...

I think grizzlies would be a great addition to the park, and it wold definitely get their attention and probably solve the whole crackhead/whore/gang member/drug dealer problem...
"Grizzlies in Central Park" the new reality show from Fox! Watch the Grizzlies maul a Crip, and other Zany Antics.... I'd never miss an episode...

Right? "Grizzlies Gone Wild: Capitol Hill Style" .... They're bearing it all!
Watch as Snoop Dogg leads all your favorite congressmen and women onto the "GGW Tour Bus" to "hook up" with one of the "grrrrlz"... (a 600 pound Grizzly sow in heat.) Then it's off to the Senate for bear-back grizzly riding, and finally; mud wrestling grizzly-style with the Commander-in-Chief himself, right in the oval office!
I'd pay-per-view that right there.

How much of a reduction in sprocket teeth would Ivan's primaries give you? |
any one?
Thats a good site highspeedhamish. Doesn't have a table for the XS650 though, check out the one in the vault under "sprockets, gears, wheels, tires" it's the same one Yamaman posted on page 2

Pamcopetes spreadsheet is great for working out ratios:
xs650temp.proboards.co...read=11068
Standard primary gears are 27 - 72 so ratio is 2.666:1
Ivans primary sets are 20% taller so they should be around 2.133:1
Ok, apparantly Ivans primaries are 32 - 69 gears, giving a 2.156:1 ratio
Skul, could you count your teeth & make sure thats right please?

Think 18/29 is right at 10% higher than stock.........20% would be too tall for me......sounds like the old road racing ratios .......the lower gears would be hell with the stock gearing and a 20% primary increase.......would probably have to start going a lot bigger on the back.....wouldn't be for me and I like tall gears......I would use 18/28 for long highway trips and that would be 12%.........

Ok, thanks to Pamcopete for a basic maths lesson, and if it's correct that Ivans gears are 32 - 69......
A standard XS in 5th gear with 17 - 34 sprockets, gives a overal ratio of 5.103:1
17 - 30 gives you 4.508:1
18 - 30 gives you 4.252:1
With Ivans gears and 17 - 42 sprockets, you get 5.097:1
17 - 40 gives you 4.854:1
17 - 38 gives you 4.611:1
17 - 34 gives you 4.126:1
18 - 30 gives you 3.348:1
Of course you can add Mikes 5th gear, but you have to start doing your own maths then!
Primary ratio (2.666 standard) times 5th gear ratio (standard 0.957) times final drive ratio (standard 34/17 = 2)
2.666 x 0.957 x 2 = 5.103

You can add a bike to gearingcomander and save it in its database. Im sure XSJohn could enter the oem specs for us

I just submitted the 1979 XS 650 information to Gearing Commander and it will take 4-6 days for them to confirm and then input the model into the database.

The real proof is what it does on the road....... if it squalls itself to death on the highway it's geared too low........if it won't pull fat mama then it may be geared to high........but forget the cool cruise down the express for sure then...

Yamaman, those specs are pretty close to my guesstimations. With Ivans primary gears it gives you more options for sprockets.
Even with mike's fifth gear and you wanted to gear higher than an 18/ 29 you need to modify the hub where the sprocket bolts on. At best a tooth or two gain. Changing the overall ratios that way also raises the lower gears as much.
With Ivan's primary gears you can gear better at higher speeds and still keep the lower speed performance. best of both worlds.

Would be better to turn the transmission faster.........get these geared high and it pays to have them smooth........loosing the cogs on 5th gear won't be the ending of a good day.........dicks everything including the forks.....
