I would like to try and sync my carbs! Where are the barbs supposed to be so I can hook up the tubing for this procedure? Do you have any pictures, as this would make it easier to find it's location? If I don't already have barbs, where can I get some. Any help would be appreciated....thanks!

On the 1981SH, the barbs should be located on the intake connection flange between the carburetors and the head. If you have the stock vacuum setup, you have to remove the vacuum lines from each barb and connect your manometer to both.

In this order:

-Set timing chain tension.
-Set valve clearances.
-Set prime fuel/air mixture (Dead Cylinder Method)
-And then... Connect your manometer to the barbs and synchronize using the center adjustment screw located between the carburetor bodies.

If you don't do everything in THIS order, you're just pissin' in the wind.

When you have finished the above procedure, fine tune the center sync screw until both exhausts sound the same. No more than an 1/8 turn one way or the other. Then, connect the barbs together with a hose and "T" for the petcock to produce an even smoother idle that will also delay the time needed before you sync again.

I would also suggest that you start the whole procedure by adjusting the mixture screws to 3 1/2 turns out for both of them. If you do the sync properly, you shouldn't have to touch the mixture screws again.

I would also suggest that you pull the hoses or caps off of the barbs one at a time for the dead cylinder sync method instead of the spark plug wires. It's a lot easier and you do not have to worry about frying the coil or the TCI.

On the right side carb there is a small tube(or barb) which is capped. On the left side carb the tube(or barb) is connected to the fuel petcock. Both of these are in a piece that is in between the head and the carb. If you think these are where I would connect the tubes from the manometer, I will follow your advice in the order that things need to be done.I've heard of connecting the tubes together like you stated to smooth out the Idle. What is the dead cylinder test? Just generally! You don't need to get into detail unless you want to. Just curious on how this all works together. THANKS for thie info so far! good to know I needed to do more befor I even started syncing!

Thanks weekendrider! At least I'm sure thats what they were now. One more question; One of the lines come from the fuel petcock to that vacume barb. What do I do with that line while I'm syncronizing the carbs? Will fuel come out of there?......I know thats two questions, sorry!

Just let it hang. Your petcock will need to be in the prime position.
