I just ruined my 3rd gasket trying to get this sump to seal. I have thoroughly cleaned the surfaces each time and this time used Permatex 2 on both sides of the gasket and again have a drip coming from the right rear corner of the sump. All these sealers seem to dry very quickly, almost before you can get the sump in place and get some bolts started. I torqued from the center out each time evenly. I think some put it on dry so I would think Permatex 2 would seal it. It sure sticks to you fingers well. Any suggestions?

Jeffery,

Well, it's difficult to really get into the corners of the mounting area for the plate, so it's possible that you missed a spot and still have some of the old gasket in place, which is lifting the plate just enough to cause a leak.

Using Permatex or any other sealant will probably just make it worse.

I would suggest another scrapping and cleaning of the mounting surface, down to the bare metal, and then press the plate against the mounting surface to see if it is absolutely flat.

If the plate is absolutely flat, then, once again, install the plate, but do not use any sealant.

However, you should use some thread sealer on the bolts because that is where the leak may be coming from, rather than around the flange of the plate.

The thread sealer I am refering to is also a Permatex product called High Temperature Thread Sealant, Item #59214.

I use it on everything that has a liquid and threads together in the same place.

I just got the sump back off and cleaned up. After 3 gaskets I decided to see if the thing is flat. Hmmm, maybe I should of thought of that a couple gaskets ago. This thing seems to be anything but flat. There seems to be lots of clearance and it wobbles all over the place on a flat surface. Anybody seen this before with these sumps? I think it may be time to find another sump. The gasket surface itself looks perfect. Anybody have a sump for sale? With only about 7 lbs of torque what could cause warpage like that?

Lay a large sheet of emery cloth on a flat surface (sheet of glass) and see if you can sand out the warp. I bought one off ebay last year and it was fine. I had that one on my list in case I needed a spare or trashed another one with a curb! Embarassed
