I am installing mikes 1 3/4 stainless steel head pipes. I would like to bolt the rear of the pipes (just before the mufflers) to the stock frame mounting holes on the frame to help secure them. It is right about in this area, where your clamps go around the headers, that the headers start there bend up making it hard to fit a clamp. Has anyone else ran across this issue and if so how did you secure the pipes and what clamp did you use?

Jeffrey, I have not had this specific issue, but ran into a similar situation when mounting my shortie reverse cones, in which the supplied strap hangers were too long. I used some 1/8" aluminum strap to fabricate my own; it's just soft enough to bend and work easily, while very stable, and it also shines up nicely with papers and steel wool. Try using this material to "get from here to there" in concert with your clamps. It might be a matter of an inch or so in your case. You can get this material at HD, Lowes or Ace.

So, my head pipes are secured at the head of course and I have a bracket secureing them from the mufflers to the frame. Do you think that an additional support is necessary at the stock position near the rear of the headpipes at the 2 stock bolt holes on the frame?

Jeffery: What year is your bike? That will make a difference in the mounts.

It's a 1978. Just wondered if you need that support at rear of the headpipe. If so I will have a clamp on the muffler and another one in front of it close to the headpipe mounting holes.

the reason I asked is because the the pre '74 models had headpipes that were about 5 inches longer than the later models. There was a small bracket about 3 inches long that attached to the center stand bolt and then back to a clamp just ahead of the muffler connection. If the Mikes pipes are as long as the old ones that might be throwing you off.

The point where the pipes begin to bend upward is where the two rear mounting holes are at. I have a clamp where the headpipes secure to the mufflers and didn't want to use another clamp if I didn't need to. It looks like these headpipes could have some sort of tabs to mount them to the stock 2 frame bolt holes to secure them at the rear the rear of the headpipes.

Jeffery:
Here is a pic of the pipe mounting setup on the '73. If you switch to the '73 centerstand bolts (longer threads) and the muffler stay you will be able to tie your pipes to the frame without the use of an extra clamp. Beware of Mikes greaseable centerstand bolts, although they fit they do not have long enough threads to let this set up work, you will have to use the Yamaha bolts for the early bikes.

Looks like those centerstand bolts may be something I'll have to find on ebay. I don't think mike sells the early ones.
