I have been working on this problem since May, not everday, but everychance I get. My 1980 XS650SG lights that stinking white light which tells me the stinking headlight is out, but only sometimes not all the time. I put the headlight, reserve lighting unit, and the "new" headlight plug into my 1981 H and they were fine. I stripped the harness until I uncovered the 4 wires soldered to the one Brown wire in a corroded mess, reconnected and resoldered all those, that worked for 10 miles and that ride alone. I am about to become "backto1" instead of "whynot2".
Any Ideas? How have other people got around the reserve lighting unit and what is the advantage?

Check you stator brushes, If there worn to marginal limits you may be getting intermitting chargeing and not allowint the system to do its job.

Thanks Guys but the brushes were new last year and still look good and the wires solid. I swapped the R L unit with my '81 and it was fine, also bypassed it by the link you sent. Still no improvement. I appreciate the ideas and could use another couple of them. Any more thoughts on the matter? whynot2 leaning towards abouttobe1.

Hey guys, what is this reserve lighting unit. I have removed the original light from my 80 xs650 and am trying to hook up two seperate lights, one for the high beam and one to run all the time, but cant figure out the wiring, as to splitting the original harness into two lights. any diagrams or info you can send me would be great. I have the manual to the bike, but it is not detailed enough.
thanks

i just got done wiring my 78 yamaha i eliminated the reserve lighting unit. I dont know what it does but everything works without it. i eliminated my flasher unit and just bought a blinker relay for a car and just ran my blinkers through that. just run a hot wire to your keyed switch so when you turn the key your light will turn on and run one to you brights switch and pone to ground. see if that works for you
