I've noticed while riding down the road at about 55 mph that the top of my chain whips up and down and causes alot of vibration. The chain is adjusted fairly tight. My frame is a rigid with a 3 inch streach in the back. Does anybody have any ideas??

A chain tensioner? I remember them from my IT250 days. Probably some sort of harmonic going on.

make sure your chain doesn't have tight and loose spots it may be strecthed in some links, a off center sprocket could do it too, hard to check run out on the teeth tho'

Chain whip is a pain. Guess we all can suffer from it because of the engine pulses can set up a vibration in the chain. This can also be caused by improper carb main needle settings at the crusing speed you described 55.
