Hey there, I am in the middle of this carb rebuild BS38's off a 1972. Can't get the main nozzle, pilot jet, or main jet freed up. Already screwed up the head of the pilot jet a little bit ooops...have had the bowl floating for an hour now, and can't get that main nozzle to pop out, it's been soaking in carb cleaner for about 20 minutes. Any suggestions so I don't make another expensive "whoops"?

try slightly tightening (just enough to feel it move) before loosening, and use screwdrivers that fit

I had to soak my carb parts in Berrymans chem dip overnight then grind a flat screwdriver so it fit tighter so there was no play or slop when inserted in the jet ..............BG

You could try a little PB blaster penetrating oil.

You've got to have just the right screwdriver, especially for the pilot jet. I don't like the major brands for screwdrivers. I have a set that was given to me which on the flat blade ones has the faces hollow ground a bit, so that where it meets the groove it's more square on the sides. They have a lot of bite. When you put the pilot jet back in, be careful not to overtighten and shave off some brass that can go down in the jet.

Okay, Will try some of these Ideas...I've pretty much buggerd up the pilot jet to the point that I'll probably have to drill the SOB out. The Main Nozzle is still stuck as they get. Looking ahead to the Left Carb, the butterfly was stuck shut, and I finally got that free and moving, but the diaphragm assembly is STUCK....that whole plunger the diaphragm is attached to wont budge a centimeter. I was looking at 650 garage's carb rebuild guide and they say you should'nt submerge the body of a carb. I'm not sure at this point how to get it loose...additionally I'd prefer not to have to replace the diaphragm. Anyways I think I can conquer the Main and Pilot Jets, but the diaphragm assembly and main nozzles are tough...Any other ideas?

Okay I've gotten 3/4 of the jets out, and the main nozzles too. The only thing I can't get is that pesky diaphragm....I think I'll buy a spray bottle for the simple green and soak it that way.

The big question is at what point whould those main nozzles be replaced? They are slightly discolored, but the thing that bothers me most is the end that is stuck in the actual body of the carb is not smooth like metal should be....the tapered end has kind of a rough/textured look all the way around the bottom. In other words it does'nt look like the pic of a new one on mikes, and it's not perfectley smooth on the very end of the tapered portion.

Thanks!
