I finally got around to removing my old rectifier and was surprised to find this one. It has all of the right wires but sure looks goofy. Is this stock on a 79 special? Thanks...

I just looked it up, it is the stock rectifier and Yamaha wants $230.00 for the stock replacement. I'm sure glad I made my own for $10.00. Sorry for the dumb question. I've just never seen one like it.

They used that rectifier on all the early models, pre single unit rect/reg. Yes, building pamcopete's Radio Shack rectifier is a good replacement.

Im having a charging issue with my 78 standard with stock reg/rec. Are you suggesting this might be the culprit over the alternator? It has new brushes in it to but no chargey

How can I test the regulator to see if it's good or not?

The repair manual tells how to check the regulator.

The easiest way to test the regulator is to bypass it. If your alternator produces an output without the regulator, then the regulator is most likely defective.
To bypass your regulator, unplug the regulator and use a jumper wire with a 10 Amp fuse inline from the battery plus to the green wire brush. Have a voltmeter connected to the battery and start the engine with the jumper in place. The voltage on the battery should climb to 15 Volts at 2,000 RPM.
DO NOT LET THE BATTERY VOLTAGE GO ABOVE 15 VOLTS!
Shut off the engine if and when the battery voltage gets to 15.

RG,
WOW...that's a really big heat sink!! Those rectifiers are gonna last forever!!
Edit: Keeping the rectifiers really cool does,in fact, reduce the drop across them, so you will actually get greater current output from the alternator.

In Canada everything is big Yeah jayel, this time of the year the igloo walls start to get a little soft, so I have to be sure not to let the bike idle too close to the house wall. We're used to stepping over the polar bear kaka
Actually, when I built the rectifier, I looked around for what I had on hand, and I had this old heat sink from about 25 years ago. I think I had it for an audio amplifier that never got built. A little large but will keep those little electrons cool.
Yeah Pete, at absolute zero, there would be no resistance, and no voltage drops in the electrical system. Ummmm..........Canadian winters are cold, but not that cold.

I got my heat sink in a grab bag at my local electronics store. 10 bucks for two of these plus loads of other stuff. Some say bigger isn't always better, but I think I could power some handwarmers with this setup.

Heat sink envy? Somewhere I think I have a heat sink off a computer processor that I will try to mod for mine when the time comes.

gus99;
That's a great job on the rectifier. Your heat sink is really cool (pun intended).
Thanks yamaman, for pointing out how trivial my heat sink now appears. Us men have fragile egos

RG -Are those connectors on there the old one spliced in or a new harness plug you bought that will plug into the stock harness?

pumps;
I used new 6 pin connectors on both the harness and the rectifier, because they were looking worn and beat-up. They are from mikesxs (canadian division).

You guys never cease to amaze me.....sure can't hurt to keep the rectifier cool ....but it's really the engine that runs too hot......not mine though......you don't put things in the oven that you want to keep.......

Probably could lay your wanker on it in cold weather if the going gets tough.....
Like they told me about my engine.......getting it running so cool it's gonna freeze up......
