i am having trouble removing the the brass jet (i believe the main jet) that is located under the drain plug

i am hesitant to crank on it to hard with a screwdriver because i am afraid to damage it

is there any need to remove it unless i am changing it or is spraying carb cleaner in there good enough to get it clean

You should remove the float bowl because if you have crud in the bowl spraying the main jet with carb cleaner is not going to solve your problem..To remove the jet you need a flat bladed screwdriver that fits tightly in the slot in the jet with no slop.. You can grind or file the tip of a flat screwdriver to accomplish this... A thorough cleaning of the carbs will require removal and complete dissassembly, soaking metal parts in carb cleaner and blowing passages out with compressed air... Its not that hard to do............BG

The problem is usually varnish that gets between the threads of the jet and the aluminum body and glues the jet in place so to speak. I had one that was almost impossible to get out so I soaked it overnight in 1 gallon pail of Berrymans chem dip... Next day it came out no problem... Are you changing the main jet up or down in size or just want to make sure its opening isnt clogged?

You could probably try throwing the whole thing in the freezer for a few hours, pull it out, throw a glass of water over it & undo!

They can be drilled, BUT extream caution should be used, as the passage can be damaged IF you hurry. Preferably a drill press & then an 'easy out' tool can be used.If you take your time, drill straight into the jet leaving enough of the jet for the easyout to bite into,it should come out. Some times a 'left hand twisted' drill bit is sufficeint.

I'd try & make a new slot, or repair the one you've got before I got the drill out!

If you drill (maybe take it to a shop with a drill press?) make sure you use a vice (soft jaws of course), an exact centre centre punch and a drill depth gauge/limiter.

DON'T use power tools with easy-outs, that is asking for trouble!

Bigger number, bigger hole, is richer!
Don't forget, main jet (and air screw) is just top end, 1/2 to full throttle, it should be suited to your top speed.
The needle jet & jet needle look after between 1/4 & 3/4 throttle
Pilots up to 1/4 throttle
