Hi, guys...

I have done a lot of reading here and on Pete's site about this iggy system, and it seems really attractive to me. When I first got my '73 TX in late summer of '07, it was a non-runner, and one of the things I did was replace almost the entire iggy system, including the points, caps, wires, coils, and condenser. I have very little miles on since then - still kind of expanding my radius on the bike and ironing out various other issues - but now there's this new iggy system.

I'm really timid about anything electrical, but I'm so temped to make this upgrade because of the maintenance involved in points systems, and the hotter spark seems like a huge bonus. But I was wondering about the new addition - Part #14-0911, the HO (green) coil. I was thinking that a hotter spark with increased reliability can only be a good thing, but I'm just wondering about whether this is appropriate for my bike, and as I said, I'm a bit timid about installation.

Input is welcome and appreciated.

yes, hotter spark is always better, i want to run points but i want the H.O. coil (with a ballast resistor), but mikesxs canadian site doesn't carry the coil yet.

TeeCat;
Which ignition coil do you have now? Was it new or used?

I have two on the '73, RG. They're direct replacements, new, from Mike's. Part #17-6805

I think the dual tower HO coil (Part #17-6810) is only for '80 and up. I just want to make sure I get the right coil for my application if I do this. I want the conversion to be effective and as easy as possible, given my childlike approach to things electrical.

Teecat, those coils only give about 12K to 13K volts, which is only just adequate. So, yes it would be a big improvement to go with a coil(s) that gives 30K volts. A system like the Pamco allows you to use a better coil with a 2 to 3 ohm primary, which gives a hotter spark.

I looked at both kits and decided to just get the cheaper one. Not sure how much of a difference the uber high output green performance coil makes...but plenty of people were happy with the other style dual output coil that mikes offered before. I did dig the yellow plug wires. Laughing

Guys, I'm looking at this kit:

Part #14-0911

According to the description, I can use that coil, but I wonder if the recommended mounting clamp would work with it. RG... can I make a mistake by using that green HO coil? You seem to be saying it would be preferable. If my stock coils are only just adequate, then it would seem to be a worthwhile, functionally significant upgrade. The other option is the kit with the grey dual tower coil.

EDIT: Seems they're all out of stock on both anyway. Sad

Grey Coil? The kit I ordered has a black one. Part #14-0901 I may be wrong, but couldn't you burn out a piston with too hot of a spark?

Looks like the green coil is out of stock, but he has the other available. Might be worth an email to see what part of the kit is missing? Seems the Pamco and old style dual high output coil are available? Must be the wires or caps

no. Wrong heat range of plug yes, sparkplugs shed heat from the cylinder.

Hmm... maybe it's just a deceptive photo. But it's dual tower, right?

That being the case, here would be my parts list, sans the caps:

- Basic Pamco Kit Part #14-0900

- HO Replacement Two Tower Coil Part #17-6803

- Original-type wires Part #23-2902

Am I right?

Hey you guy's! Just FYI,my '80-G model I installed the 17-6803 coil on mine & it bolted right up in the old coil location, just went on the other side of the frame(left side). Pointed the tower's toward's the front & used the nice 'yellow' wire's.Seams to run alot better,no missing & my plug color's are great now.The #17-6803 coil look's like you'd have to use the clamp's they're talking about.

TeeCat;
Yes, your list of parts would work well for you.

I must admit, that somehow, yellow wires and yellow coil make my bike go faster Rolling Eyes

I like those, dammit! I want blue, though! Sad Maybe I'll go with the recommended ones for now and get some blue ones later.
