When I hardtail my '80, I need a longer chain correct? Or can I just buy links?

putting new links in a used chain doesn't really work very well

I have a 3" stretch on my bike and I bought a 120 link chain off of ebay and works perfect

I plan onbuying my chain at the local farm supply. They sell a HD530 chain for about $30. It's ten feet long, to long for most bikes. I'll cut it to the length I need and save the rest.
