Didn't mean it that way......gearing sucks on these stock....if you are on the highway a lot taller gearing will help..depending on your weight.......the CR on these things is pretty high for a small engine......went to 8-1 and it really setteled down nice........bit of a mechanics thing for that one though......not sure what you are into ........
Have you set the usual things....valves cam chain and such.......and does it have the top motor mount on it.....

xsjohn | note to john; replace hearing aid battery
short exhaust pipes are going to be loud and riding posistion on a chop puts you a lot closer to the ends of the pipes also, then you're sitting right behind the engine so you hear the mechanical noise, cams, tappets, valves, ect. and yes it's a loud motor after all it's a old design and not as close tolerance as the new stuff

""""""so i should not be hearing the valves? when its running now your confusing me """"""""
ost people do hear their valves.........I don't............I just added lubrication........noise is metal to metal......and the fricken CR is a bit too high to run quietly.....once this is fixed the engine is a lot quieter.......

xsjohns, scooter is highly/largely/mostly customised. With one off stuff you can't buy off the chrome rack. If you want to know why he doesn't hear his valves search for his valve oiler thread.
jayel was right on, these just sound like old singers or sickle mowers.

Spent a lot of time on this subject......and many are using elephant feet on the intakes......not sure anyone has confirmed that it absolutely quiets the intakes.......and there is a damn that keeps oil from slinging back.....no one has reported experimenting with relieving it to allow the oil to go back from the cam.......I will leave the oilers on and add the elephant foot sometime.....that's where I'm at....and I can remove the oilers in 15 minutes but won't........
Here is the link......bit of handywork if inclined........
www.650rider.com/index...pic&t=1504
Dimpled the pistons and balanced them and got the carbs right and and the right cylinder heat under control and geared it up so it cruises........that is how I reduced the racket.....started doing this crap in 1971.....on other bikes.....I hate a fricken rattle trap........

Have you ever seen what they did to lubricate a locomotive or some factory machines......what I did is nothing......just added oil to the noisy places.....don't know of another way.........
And I never do anything that I can't back out of easly.......and these don't need money thrown at them for some fashion statement to be fun....just some tlc...............
Don't know what you guys are going to do at high speed without rear suspension.....I know today at 70 mine felt like it left the ground a couple of times on the express it was so bumpy......like at the bridges.....or just a 2 inch high patch .........

interex87, you asked a question a way back , it doesn't look like any one answered it. the speedometer goes to the front wheel and the tachometer goes to the right side of engine. yes xsjonh has done some amazing things to his engine. as i am rebuilding mine i will use some of his ideas. the higher gears and dimpleing the push rod are a couple of them.
