Looks like a nice place you have here looking forward to getting to know some of you and I hope I can get my bike running. I just picked up a 1978 SX 650 special from my father in law. I has been sitting in that back of his garage for 20 years so it needs a lot of work. The good thing is it is a complete bike all parts are there and it was running when he parked it. Seeing as how it was free I guess the price was right now I just need to get it going again. Hope I can find all the answers I need to fix it up, I am new to bikes but have a ton of background working on cars so I think things should go ok. Shocked Very Happy

Welcome. You will get all the help you need to get your bike running here. Just ask. It sounds like you have a nice find. If you can tell us more we can be more helpful, pictures are always good.
First thing I would do with that bike is take the plugs out and get some penetrating oil or the like down on the pistons. I used some with teflon and turned it over very slowly. When I got my first XS650 it had been sitting for about ten years but turned over. I put some penetrating oil on the pistons, rebuilt the carbs and changed the oil. I rigged up the gas tank from my snow blower to it and it started.

Good luck
Georelle

Well what ya know I got it running last night WOOHOO one of the carbs is a little clogged up so I will be addressing that this weekend. Pretty cool that this bike has been sitting for 20 years and all it needed was a little TLC and the beast is alive!!!

pay attention to the advance mechanism (fly weights) and rod will need to be pulled and lubed, easy to do, just pull the nut off the points cam side (watch for that little pin) and it will slide out the other side then you can re-grease it, best thing to do is get a service manual
