Hi Guys,

Just for the heck of it---how "Original" is original? My '77 "D" has a front fender, tank and exhaust system from a '75---is it not original? I'm OK either way, just wondering.

Until someone says otherwise, I'm going to assume that this will cover bikes that are used and made to work, and not just pristine examples, right? (Although I can't wait to see some really beautiful stock resto's!)

This is going to be a neat board!

Barb, that's an interesting question for sure. For a bike to be a true original, it would probably have to be a low milage bike that was stored away and never driven. That's a waste of a good vehicle, and we don't want that.

Most of these bikes have been regularly driven and parts have worn out and been replaced. Replacements are quite often better quality that the original part i.e. tires, ignition coils, electronic ignition, shock absorbers, springs etc.

I'd call my bike "close to original", because it looks original and changes have been minimal. OK, I don't have the buckhorn bars on my 78 Special, and the seat has been re-covered. Yes, the ignition has been changed to a better dual output coil. I've kept the old parts for the next owner, but there's no way I'm selling this bike anyway............."From my dead cold hands" phrase comes to mind! Smile

I recon a maintained bike that hasn't had a full strip and rebuild would be classed as an original. On my bike i have replaced the Steering head berrings, progressive front springs, rebuilt the calipers and new pads, bronze swing arm bush, and replaced broken back shocks. I class this as an original as the minor upgrades can't be seen and i have not repainted. A clean and polish is not a rebuild.

yep, "original" would suggest still in the box...i think this forum is for those bikes that are not chopped or bobbed..modifications to make the bike work better are expected..that in essence is what i would like to see...what "straight" mods people have done.

motor/handling/electrical upgrades are ok, something like a box section swingarm or inverted forks would be pushing the envelope however to me, paint doesn't matter, chopped/altered frame is a no-no, forward controls suck, lowered bikes don't bother me there are short people in the world, turn signals no turn signals personal preference there, same with gauges if you don't like a tach/speedo I don't care, pipes are another personal choice if your local cops don't care why should I,....

On my 80SG I have a 78 standard tank and intend to put a SE-SF rear guard, (fender), and will have a set of TX gauges........ I think when these sorts of things are done to the bike original goes out the door........A bike has to look original, Mikes 5th gear would be acceptable but not the big bore kit. Mikes new oil filter and heat sink i could accept, but i'm not so sure i like his gauges to be classed as original.................. Handle bars are a personal preference and could be regarded as original........Goes without saying, Matching no's would stand above a mismatched motor and frame.........

Hi Folks,

Sorry about that load of junk posts - I forgot to set the permissions on the new section. Now you see why only members can post. Spam posts like that com from robots and 650Rider.com is on their hit list so if I make a new section and don't set the permissions right.... thats what we get.

Again sorry about that it should be good now.

Hi guys,

So....correct me if I'm wrong, but "Original-ish" and/or restored is good, right? That's great! My '77 will qualify here, and the new '79 will qualify as a cafe bike. Best of both!!

There will probably be a huge gray area about which we can debate ad infinitum, and that's always fun. Great new board--I like it already.

I like mine close to original. If I want lower handlebars or different pipes I change them. I also do the swingarm bushings & steering head tapered roller bearings. Its mine, I get to do it however I want !

You're a long ride from Salt lake!! And would you really want more than one wife?

I hear you on the tense rides... I noticed the two condensor changes on the list... riding home on one cylinder? I am at the 'when can I just ride it and not tune it' stage.Getting close...
