bought an engine, missing starter and a few other misic things. so i was looking on ebay and i saw that the starters all have what looks like a flat mount. (or the holes are all straight and lined up) i sort of remember mine having angles for where the holes go, but i didn't look real heard either.
so are the motors all the same across all years? mine is a 79.

Here's a picture of the starter motor mounted on my 78SE. I believe they mounted the same on all years from 72 to 83. Apparently the starter motor was an after-thought, and it has to be the most complicated starter motor engagement ever designed. It takes about 7 gears, 2 springs and a cross-over shaft to engage the crankshaft.

you will need more than just the starter, there are four gears and a shaft. the one gear can only be installed by splitting the cases. i forgot to put mine in as i was putting mine together, had to pull it back down to put in the gear.
