OK I guys I found a bike in the paper but the guy doesn't know the engine size all he know's is that it is a 1980 yamaha 2E... Anyone know what a 2E is? I won't be able to go look at it until next weekend but I think it might be what I am looking for.

Thats what I thought... Do you think a xs400 will be able to keep up at highway speeds... ie 75-80mph?

75-80 for long it would have to be a bumble bee before it exploded.......even a XS650 is that a best if it's not set up right......

Also, is there a way to "biggie size" the engine like changing out the top end for the top end off of a 650?

Well if it was me I would take a few teeth off the back sprocket and give it a try...but I gear everything upward...seems is saw somewhere on this site that the 400 was only 6-8 mph slower than the 650 at WOT.......should do it for her and might even be a better bike in size for a 110 lb girl........ there is a few menbers here that have them.....maybe they will sound off.......

aybe it has mag wheels and electronic ignition too....but 80 was the first year for epa tuning so I would watch out for lean carbs.........

Hey batman,

in Germany the YAMAHA XS400 has a big fan community. Parts are still easy to get, and the bike is known as reliable. It should not be a problem at all to ride the 400 at that mentioned speed for a longer time. So, it could be the ideal motorcycle for your wife.

I searched german internet communities regarding a big bore kit- It seems that there is nothing available, nothing like plug-and-play. Problem seems to be that the hole in the piston for the piston pin (hope you understand what I mean) is only 16 mm diameter. This is a very uncommon dimension, so far it seems that pistons from any other motorcycle won´t fit because of this.

Good luck!

John, Yamahas parts list shows a starter motor. What may that be for?

Reg. wheels: Also according to Yamahas parts list, a 1980 model could be the XS400G or XS400SG - latter with mag wheels.

Maybe it's not an 80......honestly have not much experience with them......did see the cranks were 180 ........should be a bunch smoother than the 650........

the 2E was a 1978 year model kick only, 1980 S or SG E-start with kick also

Is it not possible to convert a kick only to a e start with kick? I am going to be re-doing most of the wiring anyway

if you're not dead set on a yamaha check out the 400T hondas or any mid sized honda up to 550cc won't be to heavy, don't know where you're located but plently of them around and they make good power

A small block Guzzi - especially the V50 - is a nice ladies bike.

Easy to drive, not too high seated, enough power for sure, affordable (as the small Guzzis were never that famous as the big blocks), e-starter, very easy to maintain/repair, parts and manuals everywhere available, and most of all ...

...classic!

Only problem: When you and your wife show up with your bikes, your wife´s motorcycle will draw all the peoples attention! Shocked

HAHAHA... Don't worry about her bike getting more attention than mine, I am currently building my own one off custom that is going to be powered by a 95 honda cbr900rr engine... Hers will probably be done before mine is though so she will get the looks over my boulevard 1400 till then
