Just noticed this today. Do not believe it did this before, but hey, maybe I wasn't paying attention. Anyways, what seal is this?

Now, immediately, I say it's the output shaft seal. But upon closer inspection, it almost looks like it is leaking between the keyways on the output shaft itself. Is this even possible? Probably not, which is why it is probably just the outer seal. But I just want to make sure before I end up replacing it. I will inevitably do so, but want to make sure it's completely impossible for it to leak in the other mentioned fashion.

If the sprocket is not tight it will leak (dribble) along the splines.......

Absolutely.

y bike needed a new seal due to a boogered installation by the PO, but your seal doesn't show any apparent deformation, though it could have wear at the sealing surface (where it mates against the shaft bushing). Before you replace it, tighten the nut to the max spec (I have it posted here somewhere thanks to 5twins) and make sure that at least one side of the lock ring is FLAT against a side of the nut. Evaluate, and then consider a replacement seal if it still leaks.

Oh alright. Yea I was just test firing the engine to verify operation, I had NO idea the sprocket itself is used to seal there, so I left it off. My Honda isn't like that so it wouldn't be the first thing I'd think of. But I will for sure do that. Thanks!

Looks to me like the clutch pushrod seal is suffering from the dreaded usual XS650 nonsense. Sidewise wear due to a dodgy bush.

Yea I was/am planning on resealing this lump. I was just concerned that this was an internal problem upon first inspection.

Well.....just don't let the old seal come in contact with the new seal.....you will end up with no bush then..........
