well, i posted a couple pics of it in the intro thread, but i figured i'll start a thread over here since i've decided this is the direction i want to go with it. first for me is going to be ditching that taillight, installing a short rear fender and a small tail, and making or buying a different seat. any suggestions? what else does it look like it needs?
(also, sorry about the giant pics and the dirty bike)

why can't you make a metal alloy or thin steel filler plate to go where the light currently is and mount a new light to the plate you could french it into it. or look for the limp sausage lights I see so many of these day's Maybe on of the old ford "stop" lights with the thin alloy stalk simple base mount and you could change the lamp to led put a resistor in the system to make up the current and should run fine.
Hope that helps
cheers and Happy New Year Kyle

The seat actually doesn't look bad for a cafe, just add a fender and light. Ebay sells original or replica Triumph taillights that look good on a cafe.

He doesn't really ride to much, I built a 1976 RD400 for him just be fore he went in the Air Force, I have it preserved in the garage for him. I am not sure what area/building he works at. He repairs the Nukes, that is all he ever told me.

ah, 91st guy, then. no wonder he's hush-hush about his job. tell him to get a dang bike up here, when the snow melts in the spring it's gonna be awesome riding weather.

Hey Dunbar, I am more of a bobber type but thats going to be nice ride when you finish. The short handlebars make the cafe style. These 650's are so versatal...gotta love 'em.

Well I think the light you have on there now isn't bad. While I'll admit its not necessarily "cafe" style, its better than stock. If you are ditching that and the mount let me know, might grab it off of you. Also, how do you have the license plate mounted and what brand/type shocks are those? Also, where'd you get the front fender from?

i'll let you know if i decide to part with it. as far as the shocks, i'll have to take a peek next time the snow melts enough that i can take the cover off of it. front fender is just a chopped stocker, or at least what was on the bike when i got it.

The bike in the back ground, ask the guy if he is interested in letting it go.
Oh Adam Sorich is my son's name, look him up.

So you are thinking about building your own gas tank?
Lucky you if you can do so.
In this case I strongly suggest "form follows function". I have built a cafe as well, and it was quite difficult to make all components match together so that you will "feel home" on your new bike: clip-ons, fairing, tank, seat, rearseats. I am average tall (183 cm, should be 6 feet), but a XS can be really small when those 183 cm meet a cafe racer.
I would fix the clip-ons or handlebar first, also rearseats and the seat to give yourself a comfy position for driving your new cafe. The tank I would design afterwards with regards to those fixed points.

I like it.
Would be not too hard to do in alloy. There's not much in the way of deep compound curves.
Maybe you could model it up in foam to get a feel for the proprtions.
