The PO said he burnt up the starter trying to get the bike started. The starter was missing when I bought it. So I started with the carbs and I have got them clean. Now I am checking out the electrical, looks like the type of mechanic I want...

I assume you're putting that fuse panel in the garbage. Automotive blade type fuses work well on these bikes. They come in a single unit fuse panel for 4 fuses, or you can just use 4 individual inline fuse holders. Better have a good look at all the electrical connections/wires.

Oldsckoolcool - Thats what my buddy said... My wife even knew that was wrong.
Hopefully all the problems are out in the open like that. I probably will install mini blades in a small fuse box to keep it clean.

I agree that you should discard the original type fuse block and update to fuses that you can readily find. I was in Sturgis in 05 when my rotor started to intermittently short out, I had a hard time finding the glass fuses to get us back to the campground where the truck and camper were. Luckily a guy from Texas came by and gave me a ride back to Glencoe.
When we got back home, I rewired the "650-dresser" to rid myself of the glass fuse panel and replaced some of the other connections. I now have 4 individual weatherproof fuse holders. I also found some of the plastic plug-in connectors had become brittle from the heat generated by the shorting issue.
Dependability is important.

Pure-Pork;
Well said; if you want dependability (and who doesn't) you have to spend time sorting out the wiring on these old bikes. Old corroded connections will sooner or later leave you standing at the side of the road.

True. Preferably on your annual summer vacation ride!
Nice topic here, but I don´t understand a word! So what is a PO ??? (I noticed that it is not post office, neither Po (german for Butt / Bottom / Tush) nor Performance Oscillator (a fictional, but highly technological term that just popped into my mind; you won´t find it in any dictionary or encyclopeadia).
And what is the sentence in US for crossbreeding KZs and XSs??

I liked my little KZ, it would really get up and move fast and it was smooth.

pumps -- I once stopped to help a guy who had a flat on the front wheel of his KZ650. I asked him if he wanted to ride behind me up to the next town (3 miles) and get a patch kit because I didn't have one, either. He just laughed at me. Then he fired it up, stood it up on the rear wheel and rode his unicycle 3 miles to the store. He was never in trouble unless the rear tire went flat, I guess.

Nice looking GPz ! I used to hang out over at the kzrider.com forum before buying the XS and selling my KZ. Those guys over there are a lot of fun too.
