Could someone please explain how the side-cover knobs
go together?

I've bought a 1979 special with the steel side-covers held on by gutter bolts. The springs on the new knobs seem to be to tight to me.

thanks for your time.

I think it may be assembled wrong in that picture. Put the grommet in the side cover first, pull the pin out of the knob. Remove the flat washer, spring and the washer with the spring seat. Now that you have the grommet in the side cover, did it come with a metal sleeve? (if so put that in the grommet at this point). Without any washers put the spring inside the black plastic knob, then put the washer with the spring seat on (seat pointed towards spring). Push the knob (with spring and seat on it) through the grommet and sleeve) hold it there it will have spring tension. Now put on the flat washer and put the pin back in.

I meant Hutzpah's picture. I have a '78 Special and this is how it works.

FYI - even when assembled correctly it can be extremely tight. I know for my '79, the same item only fit after I clipped off part of the spring. Before that, the shaft could not extend far enough beyond the threshold of the grommet to secure into the latch on the frame.

I made a set from 2 car radio knobs, acouple bolt & washers, 2 roll pins & some brake hold-down springs. I was too cheap to send away to Mike's, and had an hour to kill. (beer) Everyone asks me what the little dials are, I tell 'em it's the power band control. Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

I like them being somewhat hard to get off and on. On my old Kaw they just pushed off and on into some grommets and I always worried about them coming off at speed which I had heard was not uncommon. More secure makes me happy !

^^^ True-dat. Losing a cover sucks. These babies lock on like a tape-worm.
