Hi, i want to take these apart, does the black ring screw off?? i am having trouble and don't want to damage them. cheers

got a picture of the gauge? if it's the type with the ring around the top holding the glass face they don't unscrew but you can use a small flat blade screwdriver to pry the bottom edge of the ring up enough to get it apart, a little bit at a time and go around it several times works best, if you try to do to much at once you will ruin the ring and won't be able to reuse it after you get the ring off and want to re seal the gauge, you can squeeze the edge back down with a pair of pliers, again a little bit at a time

I saw a HowTo some were Maybe the XS1100 site, it had pictures and instructions for Taking them apart. try Google.
