i have a 79 regular and i have the electric start on it, it always use to start right up with it but recently it hasnt been starting. its turning over and everything, but the engine just wont start, it starts right up if i push start it. so im not too sure what could be wrong. i recently drained the battery and was wondering if possibly its just not strong enough now? i dont know but it sounds like its trying to start but it rarely will now without push starting it. i dont know, any help is appreciated.

The charging system and battery have to be in really good shape to use the electric start reliably; otherwise the ignition won't get enough power to fire up. I made heavier cables for the battery ground and the starter motor, and that helped a lot.

thanks for the info too guys...just what i was lookin for! - mines doin the same. just bought the bike here in the philippines and cant get parts till i get back to aus. ill try the heaver cables and maybe a new battery...
