Hello everyone,

I am trying to find some big bore kits for my 1980 XS650SG. I was talking to someone and they told me that there is someone making an 883 stroker kit. If anyone knows of this guy please let me know. Also, I am looking for some side covers. I know that the SG didn't use the metal side covers but will the metal ones fit?

Hi RUSSO,

Thanks for the link. I will look at it and let you know if I decide to get one. You don't happen to know of any place selling the side covers do you. I think I might look around some junk yards in the area too.

The SG is a special. It is a Special II, in 1980 they used plastic side coves instead of the metal ones. I would think the metal ones would work. What do you think?

The metal ones won't work if you have plastic ones unless you do some extensive modifications. I have the plastic side covers on an '83 Heritage Special. They have 2, "C"-shaped openings at the top of tghe cover that slide over 2 rubber-grommet-covered pegs and kinda snap into place. Then at the bottom of the cover it has 1 peg that snaps into a grommet-holed receiver. I know because I found them at the Yamaha Parts online at parts.yamaha-motor.com

They have been discontinued. My real desire is to get the little black plastic side covers below the normal-size side covers. They were only on the 1983 Heritage Special model, also discontinued. So I'm on a quest for those smaller ones. I've decided to custom paint the regular side covers. I'll let you know if I find the normal plastic side covers. My email is surfhigh @ earthlink.net. Let me know if you find any Heritage Special bikes for salvage, or parts or for sale for cheap. The best thing is just type xs650 on eBay search.

You can get brand new side covers from: mikesxs.com/
They have them black or chrome. They're a little pricey, but at least you can get them.
You can also get almost anything else you need for XS650's there.

Speaking of Sidecovers. I'm in the process of making some out of
"Diamond Plating" aluminum sheeting. So far I have them mounting
with the stock rubber side cover mounts for easy access. I also want to
attempt to make a tank emblem with it as well. I will make a post with
some pics soon.

Can't wait to see the pics, I bet they will look great. I have always like the look of diamond plate.

The 1980 carbs are good but to lean. Have some new kits to make them run like a top....
