So I have all kinds of wholes in my mufflers on an 80 xs special and I'm looking at options for replacement. My headers are fine. I saw on mikesxs that "universal" mufflers won't work as they won't clear the foot controls. Is this true? Can it be fixed with some careful rubber mallet work? Are their any mufflers that they sell that will work? I was also thinking about some universal Dunstall replicas, or universal slash cut. Basically my question is, what kind of muffler can I make work on this bike? I'd prefer something that makes it a little more free flowing, and will jet my carbs to match.

Thanks,

John

The head pipes and muffler on the 80 are all one piece. You need and Want new headpipes.

I bought the commando system at mikes and really like it.

XS1961, how do those mount? Is there a ready made bracket on the back?

No mate, I just cut out a triangular piece of 1/8" plate .. Took 1/2 an hour .. The silencers have a universal sliding type slot ..Dead easy & only £65 a pair..

The Special headpipes are shorter than the Standard and most aftermarket ones. There is a simple mod you can do using an exhaust pipe adapter from the auto parts store. This will add an inch or so of needed length and make fitting aftermarket mufflers easier. Here's a link to the thread .....

Thanks for the link 5twins.That maybe what I do, the commando set is tempting, but it'd be nice to be able to just buy the pipes. XS1961 what kind of pipes are those and where are they found?

Theyre listed as Triumph 'teardrop' silencers for '63-'70 models though I have a set of BSA A65 silencer on another XS which look almost identical. Ive had a few sets off Ebay for £65ish but theyre for sale all over the UK at various Britbike parts suppliers.
TId have thought there were many suppliers over in the states stocking them as youve probably have more Bonnevilles/Trophys on the road than we have ..

Those triumph teardrop silencers are lovely ive had some on mine for ages and they sound real nice but not too loud, as xs1961 said you should be able to pick a pair up easy in the states probably cheaper too. ceers tweedy

Are your headers original xs1961? Reason i ask is i was under the impression the specials header pipes were slightly shorter than the standard, i had to weld about 5" of pipe on to fit my teardrop silencers on. My headers need changing at some point so will be going for the slightly longer ones........... any recommendations? I hear what your saying 5twins but mine were real short i think PO got bit keen with the angle grinder or they are summat else........triumph maybe who knows . cheers tweedy

god noo...Stock downpipes are way too restrictive , never use 'em - always the first items I junk when I get another XS
All my downpipes are Halcos , I bought up several sets in 1 1/2" & 1 5/8 from him years ago....Just in time as things turned-out Twisted Evil
