I have a 75 xs650 and when it is sitting and not running the headlights will randomly turn off. When I start the bike they come on again.
I checked both battery cables and they are clean and tightly connected.
Also when I am riding the bike when it is decellerating the light get dim and I am told by my buddies that my tail light cuts in and out at random times.
Any ideas ?
I am new to the forum and this is my first xs and im lovin every minute of it !!!

Check your fuse holder... they tend to crack with age and create bad connections... which will cause the symptoms you describe.

The fuse holder is new. The original one on the bike was broken as you described and I replaced it.

Next time the bike is sitting and the lights turn off, dont start the bike, instead start wiggling and gently pushing and pulling on wires and keep an eye on the lights. If and when they suddenly come back on you have isolated your problem and will probably find a loose or corroded connection. You can also do this procedure in reverse. While the lights are on wiggle wires to try and get them to turn off. When the bike is running the vibration is making and breaking the connection thus sometimes they work sometimes they dont...................BG

Thanks Ill have to give that a try.
I was studying the wiring diagram and noticed there is some kind of stop light checker.
Where is this typically located on a 75 650 and is it possible to bypass is ?
Also what purpose does it serve ?

On my 79 there is a red light between the spedo and tach in that little light cluster that lets you know if either the tail light or brake like goes out. Not sure if its the same on your 75. I havent bypassed mine yet but I'm sure you can................BG
