My 80 with electronic ignition has an advance unit?
Is this a case of someone long ago replaced the head with an older unit? No points, just the advance unit and shaft.
Can I just pull the whole shaft out and set it on the shelf?

Thank you
Don

Yep... pull it out, set it aside or sell it... My '82 is electronic ignition and my cam is hollow.. you don't need it.

Thanks for the info.
I've had this bike since 94, and back then there was nothing to go by but the manual, which I never completely trust. I was never sure if the advance and shaft were necessary to keep things aligned, or to provide some sort of feed back for the the valves.

y boy wrote "Wash Me" on the tank this year, in 4 years of dust. With the new info available on the 650 forums I have it running better than ever. Little things like knowing to adjust the cam with the engine running, and that there is supposed to be a metal and a rubber washer under the Mix screw in the carburetor make a big difference.

I'll take the advance out tomorrow. Once less thing to whirl and rattle in the top end is a good thing.

does your frame and engine numbers match? the numbers matched from the factory. if not then a po may have swapped the whole engine. that would also explain having the advancer and rod still in there.
