I just purchased new rotors, pads and shoes for my bike, and they should be here by this week end. The problem is, I don't have a bike hoist, and don't really want to buy one at the moment. I've tried lifting my bike on the center stand before, but with no luck.

Does any one have any special techniques for getting the bike on the center stand?

There is a method that works, but upper body strength does help. Its really 2 things happening at once. You push down hard with your foot on the arm coming out of the centre stand, and at the same time lift up on the side of the bike frame. It does not work well if you fail to do both at the same time.

Put the back wheel on a 2x6 you've already lifted it 1 1/2".
Then follow the tips in the link.

I just tried the technique in the article, and I was able to get it up on the stand pretty easy. I guess that gym membership is paying off Smile

Now I just have to wait for the brakes to show up in the mail.

Getting the old XS up was easy. I learned the touch on my 79 KZ650 Kawa and STRUGGLED until I figured out that stepping on it was a big part of it. Damn thing was heavy! And I'm a cracker ass!

If you have a pre '82, you may find that you need to brace your stand. The unbraced tangs on the older stands have a nasty habit of breaking off, sometimes taking the whole left foot with it. Here's an original '82 stand with the additional bracing Yamaha added and my original that I added similar bracing to .....

I have had my 81 stand welded twice, and I just bought a stand off of an 82 withthe bracing!

YA i had My grand dad weld my 80 stand holding up great so far if it does go again I'll deafenatly have em add a brace.
It broke before I had the lift techniqu, and back tire on board, before lifting, now it gets alot less stress.
