There are several different size tanks.................if you post the size then someone will know the answer.
y 78SE has a 11 litre tank. I get about 47 mpg. So with conversion it works out to about 136 miles (completely empty)

my 81 has 2.5 gallon tank at 45 mpg - better on the highway - I always use 80 in town - 100 MAX on the highway

(that's why god made RESERVE)

On my '78 Special I never allow it to reach reserve. Experience has shown me that reserve with this tank = almost no gas left.

I fill up when I get to 100 miles or so.

Start looking for gas at 110 miles. Never had to use the reserve and 2.1 gallons US will top it off.

One of these days I'm going to see if I can raise the tubes for the on position on the petcocks. This will make it run out of gas in the on position sooner and make reserve something usable.

If you fit a tank from a mid-to-late 70s standard, you'll gain another gallon (4 as opposed to 3). You'll have two petcocks to deal with instead of one, but it shouldn't be too difficult to replumb your fuel lines. You'll need to put a cap on the vacuum port on your left side intake boot as well.

Best,

ichael

If your not worried about maintaining the stock look, my buddy put a tank on his called the "porkster" its 5.3 gallons but is large compared to the original tank it also uses a cross pipe so the gas will drain out of both side of the tank using a gravity fed petcock

I seem to get about 38 mpg and turn on reserve near 90 but I have plenty in the reserve. atleast 30 miles I bet. You guys getting 45-50 mpg what are your crusing rpms I cruse at about 4-42000. I think I should get better milage. I cant adjust the pilots out enough to get dark plugs. I'll raise the floats abit see if that helps. I think it is on the mains toomuch. 80 w 34s.
