From what you describe, you must be using a dual ouput coil. The 2 spark plugs fire together every 360 degrees of crank rotation. One set of points is out of adjustment. I would do a static timing set-up. With the ignition off, put an ohmmeter on the right side points so that you can see when the points open. Adjust the large back plate until right points open in the F area . Then do the same for the left points and adjust the small half plate to open in the F area. Run engine and check with timing light.

Bob, I think you need to get a shop manual. You're asking numerous basic, simple questions. We can answer those but you should be able to figure them out for yourself. It's all in the books. Read it and weep, as they say.

Let's see -- ummmm -- if I have a two-cylinder engine and one cylinder fires at TDC and the other cylinder fires at 10 degrees BEFORE TDC, is that engine going to run right? Ummm -- let me see. . . .

Are you trying to say you are using a dual lobe point cam with one set of points and one dual coil........and the timing is not coming up the same on both cylinders...........?

First I'm a little lost with the timing stuff also. I have to reread the manual everytime I gap the points. Sorry jimmytrucker I should know. But thats the way my gray matter works. Wouldn't the back plate have to do with the the advancing and retarding of when it sparks? So bobfrazier, maybe it's a timing issue? Each side is set seperately. The coils and gap of the points wouldn't have anything to do with it?

If you're having problems with the screws for setting points timing, change them to allen head cap screws...................much easier to work with.

1) Get a dual-lobe point cam from Mikes XS.
2) Install the dual-lobe cam.
3) Hook both wires to the top set of points.
4) Gap and static-time the top set of points.
5) Back the bottom set of points AWAY from the cam so they don't rub at all. Lock them down and leave them in place so you'll always have a spare set handy.
6) Fire the bike up and strobe-time the engine.
7) Get a beer and relax. You'll never have to f*** with timing two sets of points again.
Cool Thanks to the experts here who taught me that trick.
