| Check magnetism under the stator cover. Lower left side cover. Brushes are located here as well. Most of them have yamaha on it. Turn the bike off us a little feeler gauge and place it next to the stator about 1/4 - 1/2 away. Turn the bike on. The feeler gauge should then slap the stator.

Brush replacement can be a little tricky as you need to route the wire behind the bracket before you solder it in. Here's a detailed drawing (thanks to Jayel) .....
