Does anyone have a quickfix for minor downshift backfire. I changed the plugs thinking that would help but not much change?

A quick fix might be new intake manifolds if yours are the old originals. They tend to harden up, crack, and start leaking air when they get old. You should also remove the factory caps over your mix screws if it hasn't been done already and re-set them. They were set too lean from the factory to meet E.P.A. specs.

90 percent of the time deceleration back fire is caused by a too much of a lean mixture, which you need to rejet and/or caused by an exhaust leak. Try looking around your pipes to see if there are any cracks or if a muffler is not on correctly. Next, check your head gaskets, these get jacked over time.
I have the same issue, I need to beef up my gas intake, but I am going to wait until i get my XS cone filters to replace my WT velocity stacks to do it right.
