Does anyone know if it is possible to make an XS750 cast rear wheel (18") work on a '78 650 Special (cast 16" rear)? I want an 18 rear with matching design, and the XS750 rim is that, but the bike has shaft drive.....With the shaft hub and crap removed, can it be used on a the XS 650? If not, what cast 18" rear wheel do I need to find? Thanks

Dave

I've heard of folks who wanted an 18" cast wheel on their trackers go with one off of either an SR500 or an XS400. Can't remember which? Somebody else here will likely know.

Best,

ichael

The SR500 wheel is not a good choice. It has a larger hub and runs something like a 44T sprocket stock. About the smallest you can go with is a 39 or 40 and that's still way too big for these bikes. I've heard of using RD400 mags as well. The late models of the XS500 used mags too but I'm not sure if they'll work. Some spacer fabbing and bearing changes will probably be called for no matter what wheel you choose.

But can you convert a shaft drive rear wheel to run a sprocket?

I doubt it. 5twins rang a bell. Yeah, it was the RD400 wheel that I've heard people use.
