XS650 Frame CAD model

Hey,

Does anyone have/know of a 3D (or 2D for that matter) CAD model for an XS frame?

I'm looking at switching over to a mono-shock and it would be great to design/model up my mounting and brackets before I start fabrication. For reference I do all my CAD work in SolidWorks 2005.

Second question, if there isn't such a thing, would anyone using similar software be interested in working with me to get something modeled up? I figure for all the guys doing any 3D CAD work we could divide the workload and get something kicked out pretty quick that would an asset to the community at large.

I'm interested. I've been collecting links on monoshock conversions. Roy posted a pdf here a while back, which is a line drawing of the three frames -- early, standard, and special. It might be worthwhile to have all three to refer to, since each measures differently in the rear shock area.

I have an older copy of Design CAD 3D, which will read Autocad files. Bought it maybe 5 years ago, and never used it much. So I'm a novice. But I'm plenty good with pencil and paper.

I also have a 78 standard stripped to the bare frame and a 77 standard rolling chassis (with swingarm still attached). So I can take measurements if you need them.

Hello, I am a SolidWorks guy myself. I don't have any models yet, because I just got the bike, and I don't have any time right now. I plan to model (my '78 standard) over the summer. If you are working on the modeling now, let me know, and I may be able to work with you. I have seven years of experience as a mechanical designer using Solidworks, and I have already modeled one bike already.

Dude,

That's great to hear. I've already done my tank and rear fender/cowling now I'm starting to look at the frame stuff.

Perhaps we could split up some of the work, my '74 should be real close to your '78. If I start modeling anything next it will be the rear swingarm.

C, I wish I had SW 2005. I have 2004, so we can't swap files. We can convert to .step files and share them, but we can't open and edit sketches. My problem is that I'm in a very intense academic program right now, and I don't even have time to get the bike running much less spend a lot of time drawing the thing. It will be fun, but it will be at a slow pace.

I eventually want to build a feather bed style frame, so the engine is what is most important for be to model (so I can make it fit). Of course, I will want to model the whole bike so that I can tweak the geometry to my likening.

Again, this is all down the road stuff,

You guys also might want to see if you can find any info/specs on the Champion frame that the XS dirt trackers used. Some folks still use them when they can find them. Light and strong.

I did some digging. Found out that a guy named Mike Konle bought the original Champion Frame business from Dough Schwarma, and continued building frames for some years. Then he got into the crane business, named his business Champion Crane, and caters mostly to the movie industry. Here's his website:

You know, it just might be worth an email to ask him if he has copies of plans of his XS650 dirt tracker frames and ask if he'd sell/give you a set. If he has 'em, I bet he would.
