I've never seen a fork cap like that before. What bike are they from? They may be retained by a snap ring. If so then you'll need to depress the cap slightly (against the fork spring) and while holding it that way, remove the snap ring.

I considered the snap ring possibility, but there is none... I was lead to understand they were 35mm forks off an XS, the triple trees certainly match. I've not seen caps like this either; the center part is some weird preload adjuster which slots into the different slots.

dave,
I emailed the guy I got them from they to the best of his and thus my knowledge were from an xs.
I have done a little research and they are from an xs750 mid 70's there is a circlip that holds the cap. if you go to bike bandit there is a schematic gived the exploded view.

Thanks for the info... I found the diagram you mentioned and you seem to be spot on! these are actually off YET another bike! I have to find more projects for all these spare forks I have
