First I want to say thanks for the great information on your site. I just got my 80XS650 running, replaced the rotor to get the charging system working. While I was at a local shop I talked to guy that was replacing the rotor with some sort of solid state device (i think that is what he said). He said he would have to manualy start from now on but no more rotor problems. From Mikes site I saw this question posted.
9. Q. Can I run the XS without a battery ?
A. No, the XS has a non permananent magnet type alternator rotor which means the charging system requires a power supply to make power. The power supply to the charging system comes from the battery and the ignition system requires a power supply.

What can you do to replace the rotor system and is it a good idea? I plan on talking to the guy at the shop more and will post any info I get.

I saw reference to someone fitting a bosch alternator to a XS650 with pictures but nothing on how to mount, model number or wiring. It did fit inside the cover and had quite a bit more output. Any electrical experts out there?

A bit more snooping came up with this info. The alternator is a BMW or Moto Guzzi unit from the 70's/80's. A bit of machining is needed but it does apparently fit. Here is a link to an Ebay auction for a Guzzi altenator.

I was browsing the Aussie XS650 Club site and it's apparently not uncommon down there to replace the altenator with a permanent magnet unit from an RD. This allows the use of a "battery eliminator" capacitor which means chopper and tracker builders don't have to make fake oil tanks or use number plates to hide the battery. Of course then it's kick-start only.
