--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I want to build a custom bike, I wanna start from scratch.
There is this XS650 on ebay, all it is is a frame and a motor, nothing else. It's a '79 model and doesnt come with a title.
Can I do a title bond on just a frame ?
Does the bike have to be complete?
The thing is I'd like to have a title before I start puting work and dumping money into it.
I have done title bonds on cars and bikes before but they were complete and in running condition. SO I'm familiar with the process.

Check your state regs. Some states don't require titles on older vehicles (I think New York is 15 yrs for example), other states are fairly relaxed about titles and will accept a bill-of-sale. If these don't work, there are "title services" that will provide you with paperwork to get a title in your state-have never used them but they seem to work.
First thing I'd do is check your state government web site to see if they have info posted on vehicle registration. Most of the time you can get around a lost/unavailable title somehow.
Good luck

Maybe you can title it with the engine #. Here in California you can.

Think so, the last part of the VIN is the engine # so if you know what the first part of the VIN is for a certain year bike you can just add the engine # to it and have the original VIN that the engine came from. Maybe you can determine year from the engine #. Anybody out there know for sure?

You should be able to use the stock VIN that is stamped on the neck. if not, my 79sf starts with 2FO, dont know if that'll help er not but ya never know.
